Consumers who realize that they are paying too much for cable TV but who aren’t getting the programs that they want are looking elsewhere. Cord cutting, which means unsubscribing from cable TV subscriptions and relying purely on free over-the-air HD antenna broadcast as well as what is available on the Internet either through streaming services or downloads, Services like Netflix and BBC’s iPlayer run on tablets and on SmartTVs and consoles and use the Internet to deliver shows on demand. TV networks are also getting in on the action offering tablet apps that play streaming versions of popular shows for free but with an advertising component. A good example of this is the CityTV app for the iPad Although these are paid services, they are less expensive than even basic cable and offer unlimited access to their programming. The only other expense to consider is the Internet bandwidth required to stream the content, which will vary depending on the quality of the video stream. Many of these services are available as apps on smartphones and tablets where standard definition versions are perfectly fine for playback. Many tablets do have the option of connecting to larger HDTVs using HDMI or wireless technologies such as DLNA or Apple’s AirPlay (the latter requires an AppleTV to act as a conduit). With these solutions in place, users can consume content on their tablet devices or any HDTV and their only costs aside from subscriptions (in the case of BBC iPlayer and Netflix) is the bandwidth they use to stream the content. This also becomes a good, ‘catch up’ service that rivals the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) since consumers can watch recent shows that they missed days after the program has shown. These solutions won’t replace live TV and aren’t a very good option for sporting events or news but we’re sure solutions catering to those markets aren’t too far away.
